“This track is about how it feels to fall in love with a friend over and over again, and the aftermath of that.”
These are the words written by the artist – Jonesboro singer/songwriter Cade Williams (professionally known as weavercreek) – about his newest single on Bandcamp. And by God, does he hit the nail on the head (assuming the aforementioned love is unrequited).
Listening to the song, we’re overcome with a sensation that we imagine is what drowning feels like. Sinking slowly into an abyss of sorrow and regret.
Lyrically, there are several highlights, but our favourites are “want to kill you with kisses/lips laced with the poison you gave me” and “kick me to the ground, I’ll stay there”. These words seem to crystallise the feeling of desire, desperation, and despondency that comes with feelings of this size and rejection of the hardest and cruelest kind.
We have a soft spot for songs that are explicitly personal, but at the same time widely relatable, and weavercreek has achieved that perfectly here. Obviously, the song is rooted in personal experience, but we’re sure it will speak to many people on a level specific to them, too.
push me away is an understated modern alt-folk masterpiece, an anthem for the brokenhearted and for the jaded romantics everywhere.
