Single: Field Hospitals – Everyfire

A fusion of indie, post-punk, and even krautrock elements, Minneapolis quartet Field Hospitals’ Everyfire is a driving, ultra-melodic force of nature.

Invoking the fiery spirit of yesteryear through the sound of legendary bands like The Replacements, R.E.M., Stereolab and The Waterboys and infusing it with modern vibes more in line with acts like Death Cab For Cutie, The National and The Stokes, these guys (Dan Ganin on guitar, Hank Henry, vocals and guitar, Matt Helgeson on bass and Jeff Ball on drums) are really onto something.

The combination of subtle synths, classic indie rock tones and textures, and persistent, pounding percussion and catchy songwriting makes for a seriously satisfying sonic assemblage. Coming across like a perfectly balanced blend of jangle pop and power pop, but filtered through the lenses of the aforementioned many and varied subgenres, Everyfire is an undeniable prospect.

Field Hospitals won glowing praise from critics for their debut EP, Ethel Green, with the revered Spin selecting it as one of the best EPs of the year. They look to be continuing along the right path with the material they’ve put out since then, and Everyfire is no exception.
