Twin Bloom, an Oakland-based indie rock band, releases Summer’s Gone on July 10th as part of their upcoming self-titled EP, their second release following their debut single “Magazine Dreams” earlier this year.
The song is upbeat and easy to enjoy. Gvir Aviv and Michael Nguyen’s guitar goes well throughout the whole track, giving the track a warmth that moves without feeling rushed. Joshua Cano’s bass sits comfortably underneath, and Sandra Alvarenga’s drumming is propulsive, holding the whole thing together. The close vocals between Aviv and Cano are, to me, the band’s strongest asset here, giving the song a familiarity that can resonate well with an audience.
My favorite part of the song was their lyrics, as I connect the most with them, as I just ended my Senior year of high school. It’s a universal feeling of seasons slipping alongside the people and memories that defined you and that you will carry. Lines like “all my friends are leaving town, and they’re all getting lost,” or a wind chime saying goodbye, carry well and suit the band’s sound well. The repeated ‘Summer’s gone and I can’t go back”, is simple but it works.
Where the band shines the most is in how they handle their instruments collectively; there’s a patience to the arrangement and a genuine chemistry between the four of them that comes through on this track. Produced by Maryam Qudus and mastered by Amar Lal, the song is clean and well put together.
“Summer’s Gone” is a solid, enjoyable track and a decent introduction to what Twin Bloom is building toward. They’re a band worth keeping an eye out for as the EP drops.
