From the opening notes of “Pardon”, the song immediately disarms the listener. It sure grabbed my attention. The New Orleans-based project from Amaya Connor came to life with the help of her friends, and altogether they create such a refreshing sound with a distinctive voice.
Going into my senior year of high school, a couple of lines stayed with me. “Living is the only card you get and the only card you play” feels universal without trying to be. “I hate when I doubt me” hit me more than I expected: It reflects the doubt everyone in their life experiences, making it a line — and a song — to which many will connect.
What makes “Pardon” stand out the most is what happens towards the end of the track. Connor shifts into something candid, almost “caught on tape”. It gives a sense of realness which makes for an amazing touch.
Connor recorded and mixed the track with Cam Smith, with Hu$shPuppy on the electric guitar, bass, and drums. Her friends on the instruments and mixing board form the music in a way that suits her lyricism and vocals. All together, they form “Pardon” into a song reminiscent to anyone of any age feeling doubt.
