Single: French Fry – Black Whole

Athens-based musician and songwriter is back with Black Whole – a thick, hypnotic, swirling piece, that envelopes you in sound and builds a world around you.

Athens-based musician and songwriter French Fry began writing his own music back in 2022, inspired by the recent resurgence of indie rock – led by prominent bands like Fontaines D.C. & Idles – so he’s a relative newcomer to the scene. His new single, however, feels familiar, but also fresh. Deep, dark, and brooding, Black Whole comes across like a blend of Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire, and Beach House – with a shimmery synth-led lead line and an unmistakable darkness that feels unlike any of these acts.

Thick and sludgy, Black Whole creeps along like molasses seeping out of a vat, overflowing with suggestions of sinister intent, and eventually finds its way inside you, latching on to your soul. Hypnotic and swirling, it envelopes you in sound and builds a world around you.

Lyrically, the song seems to focus on distant adoration and the prospect of dealing with the distance (“You’re simply too far / I’m so medicated”) and the power of infatuation (“Your love is a drug / It’s so entertaining”). Repetitive to the point of almost feeling more like a mantra than lyrics, the song is unrelenting and burrows deep.

Black Whole is the second single taken from French Fry’s forthcoming debut album “QUIT YOUR JOB!” which is due to be released in June via Fine! Records.
