For the times we live in, one of the promises we really should have made is to convince bigger corporations not to try ACTUALLY to reenact a Black Mirror episode.
For those not familiar with Black Mirror, it is a futurist television show that sees regular people at the mercy of technology used in cruel and manipulative ways. Right now, between trying to hack our phones and sweetly selling surveillance cameras for the sake of aiding fascist practices, we still have to tackle one of technology’s most fatal products: isolation. Rather, the act of turning to technology as a means to overcome your isolation.
Molotov Ohm’s “Clovarid” is set in a world where blinking pads resemble blinking, changing lights, be it on a phone or taking place in a smart room. Digital calm gives way to overstimulation, with little need for volume elevation. Every repeat of “flashing light warning” is either ignored, inspires absolute anxiety, or is misunderstood as the song goes on. But either way, the eerie synth grounds you in such a dark and lonely reality. At least till the technology starts warping, music builds to a climax, and you never know if the song is fading out because the battery is running out or if it is a “Space Oddity”- style fade-out from a possible climax. Either way, if this is a piece of what you will receive from the new album, Reality Pills, expect a delve into a future you aren’t ready for.
