I think it’s safe to say that Bayonne is one of the biggest artists we’ve covered here at Start-Track, and – given his popularity and longevity – you can rest assured that new single ‘Multiphase’ is an expertly crafted musical treat!
Bayonne (aka Roger Sellers) says he uses his moniker as a therapeutic, cathartic outlet, which has helped him navigate difficult personal events and struggles with mental health. Such angst isn’t often associated with electronic pop, which may be why Bayonne’s songs resonate so strongly – he has nearly 900,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and his top tracks have amassed tens of millions of streams.
As Bayonne prepares for a US tour (supporting Kishi Bashi), he returns with ‘Multiphase’, his first solo single since 2024.
There’s a gloriously light and breezy start, with delicate synths and a hypnotic arp that creates a steady pulse (fun fact: the track is based on a loop from a Prophet synthesizer that was recorded years ago).
Bayonne’s ethereal vocals are so smooth, they seem to float from the speakers on a gentle breeze, carrying irresistible hooks with a crystal-clear tone.
I always enjoy ambiguous lyrics that paint interesting pictures. Bayonne says that ‘Multiphase’ is about processing grief and feeling overwhelmed with multiple things at once. You can check out the full lyrics at Bandcamp:
“Again it comes around
It’s always sooner or later
Peeling back all the layers
When they come for the indigo
I know the aftermath
And feel the struggle within it
Leave me alone for a minute
As I work for the audio”
The relatively restrained production works really well, giving every element space to breathe and allowing the melody to shine through. I loved the way those higher notes created a sense of weightlessness. It’s a soothing soulfulness that radiates warmth.
Like a clockwork music box with an expertly crafted mechanism, ‘Multiphase’ works its magic with an effortless, hypnotising flow and is a perfect example of laser-focused songwriting that cuts straight to the heart.
