Bedroom pop veteran Andrew Brethour has had a busy few years. He’s been making music since at least 2015, but since 2022, he’s been releasing new material relatively steadily.
The newest tune, Reverie, is a hazy piece centred around a subtle acoustic guitar, reverberous vocals, tasteful percussion, limited lead lines, and sumptuous strings.
Lyrically, it’s a sombre affair (“you seemed so depressed / as I look into outer space / she said I’m crying again, don’t think you’ll ever understand”) with the instrumentation providing both light and shade to accompany the darkness.
The overall vibe is pure bedroom/dreampop, and we’re reminded of acts like our own Julian Wa, yves02 and the recently reviewed Recovery Day. In parts, the backing vocals remind us of one of our all-time favourites – High Violet-era The National.
It’s a welcome, if a little overdue, discovery, and we’ll be sure to keep a close eye on this Canadian singer-songwriter going forward.
