Nearly 40 years ago, London was the epicenter of the two-tone ska sound with the Specials, Madness, the Beat, and more. Twenty years after that, the radio waves were filled with Britpop bands making their own name. Now, in 2026, The Mooches are combining these two special iconic sounds into their own unique ska tracks. The most recently released of these singles is “Rude Boy”.
The song begins cheery and upbeat, with a peppy beat on the drums and a nice upstroke rhythm on the guitar before the keyboard jumps into motion, adding a second ska rhythm on the offbeat, setting up a nice, pleasant pace. The vocals swing in pleasant and melodic. The notes are held a little longer than I expected, and the song brings a bit of a sense of joy that almost feels out of place. The backing vocals give the song a bit of a surf vibe, and the short guitar solo later in the song definitely has a bit of a surf rock vibe to it. The entire song feels soft and beautiful…
The disconnect is in the juxtaposition with the lyrics, where the song is about a Rude Boy getting out of jail for an unmentioned crime, trying to patch up a relationship that failed while he was in prison, with a woman who has moved on.
The Mooches are putting out phenomenal new ska that has a unique sound with diverse influences that help expand the scope of the genre. This track is slower, melodic, and danceable with a little bit of surf-rock and Caribbean influences, but their other songs have more shoegaze, Britpop, and other influences. This is definitely a band you should check out to appreciate the broad appeal of ska music across genres and to hear something that is simultaneously traditional, modern, and unique.
