Intimate, warm and rootsy, the new single from San Antonio, Texas singer/songwriter and independent musician Foster Pettit is expertly realised.
Perfectly measured in its pace and its approach, it takes its sweet time burrowing into your heart and mind, but burrow it absolutely does.
It starts with a combination of acoustic guitar and a twangy, catchy lead guitar line that is prevalent throughout the song. We’re reminded quite quickly, a little bit of the wonky or wobbly sensibilities of bands like Pavement blended with the considered pace of slowcore acts like Low.
Together, these components work wonders, building something substantial out of not very much at all. Indeed, the other elements are also markedly reserved. The drums, dry and crisp, and the bass, tastefully reserved, serve the song perfectly, as does the combination of a subtle shaker and gentle backing vocals in the background.
Dusty, beautiful, and earnest, Best Part almost feels a bit like it could’ve been plucked from Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged set.
Easy to get lost in due to its hazy glow, but also simple to find your way back from – thanks to its unerring oxymoronic clarity – fans of Elliott Smith and J Mascis’ softer side will love this. We know we certainly do.
Having been releasing work sporadically since he started out in 2022, 2026 has been Pettit’s most prolific year yet, releasing a steady stream of new singles. We are excited to see what the rest of the year holds.
