Formed over a few pints down the pub (as many great ideas tend to be), The Horses are back with their new single.
Made up of Tyler Wyatt and Johnny Burke, this is their fourth tune thus far, and the duo seems to be really cooking with gas.
The band originates from Boston, Massachusetts, but – on this track at least – they have a sound that’s seemingly rooted in the UK, with the influence of acts like The La’s, The Housemartins, and Teenage Fanclub coming streaming through.
The music feels jangly, free and loose, but also propulsive and “together” enough that it comes across as driving and forceful, but in a tender and considered way.
Aside from the obvious British musical influence, there’s also more than a whiff of acts as varied as The Byrds, Dinosaur Jr, and The Breeders here, as well as maybe a bit of surf rock. The smorgasbord of inspirational sources makes for an incredibly potent proposition and an undeniably compelling listen.
Energetic, tongue-in-cheek, wry, and humorous, the track feels as sincere as it does sardonic. An exemplary exercise in how to balance multiple moods and messages at the same time, this is some really clever stuff.
Sunny, summery, spritely and spirited, It’s Alright (It’s Summertime) feels anthemic in an understated way, which sounds like a contradiction in terms, but trust us, it absolutely works. Prepared to meet the new soundtrack to your summer.
