As much as we love writing about the next new and amazing band to come out of Brooklyn, New York (of which there is absolutely no shortage), it’s incredibly refreshing and genuinely exciting when we encounter a band that moves us that comes from slightly further afield.
Indian four-piece band Purple Cassette have developed a distinctive combination of indie garage rock, psychedelia, punk, and synthpop. Beginning initially as the brainchild of one individual, they morphed into a duo in 2019. They started out making acoustic/psychedelic pop music and eventually, as they acquired more members, their sound developed and grew into what it is today.
The earnest vocals are ragged and raw – not too dissimilar to the early approach of Julian Casablancas or maybe even a little bit like Howlin’ Pele Almqvist. Behind them, the drums are tight and precise, the bass throbs, the poppy synths sing, and the guitar is like a train track upon which the whole song chugs along.
Part New Order, part The Strokes, part Hot Chip, the band have professed to prioritising feeling and emotion over technical proficiency and, when you fuse that with the nostalgia factor of the influence of decades of rock history, it’s not surprising they have garnered fans – young and old – across the country.
The New Delhi quartet have built up quite the live following too due to their energetic and enthusiastic sets, if you’re lucky enough to be able to go see them live, be sure that you do.
