“Hailing from San José, Costa Rica, Adiós Cometa has been making waves with their unique blend of shoegaze, dream-pop, and post-punk. Their sound is characterized by a melodic and introspective quality, made possible through their use of “lots of reverb, chorus, and delay.
In early 2021, Adiós Cometa caught the attention of international media and blogs with the release of two singles. They went on to sign with the independent label Velvet Blue Music from California, becoming the first Latin American artist to join the label in its 25-year history. Their first EP, ‘La Isla Que Somos’, was released through VBM in March of that year, and was met with critical acclaim, attracting new English-speaking listeners and gaining a following in the United States.
Since then, Adiós Cometa has continued to grow in the music scene. In 2022, they played alongside Los Blenders (MX) during their visit to Costa Rica and later traveled to Mexico City for their first international shows. They released a split EP with the New York band Isla Invisible and participated in various compilations, including Major Awards from Pacifico Records.
In 2023, Adiós Cometa continues to gain popularity, playing shows with international artists in San Jose, including a memorable performance at Transitarte, the city’s largest public festival. They also recently opened for Depresión Sonora (Spain) and Nothing (USA). Meanwhile, the band is finalizing the recording details of their first full-length album.”
I have discovered Adiós Cometa thanks Arío Rojas, who started Z Tapes Latinoamérica. The project is no longer active, but I had the idea to show more love to Latin-American bands. A few years later, I have still this blog and I have still an outlet, where I can bring you great music from that part of the world. The Costa Rican music scene (check also Lentamente) has been released interestingly and I am happy that Adiós Cometa is still releasing great music. This new single is a blend of post-punk, emo, and shoegaze with great Spanish vocals.
Here is a blurb I translated from their (Spanish) press release:
“Adiós Cometa, known for their melodious, introspective, and passionate sound, which navigates shoegaze, dream-pop, and post-punk, has evolved in recent times towards a more ferocious, noisy, and emotional sound. “Diente de Dane” reflects this transformation, incorporating flashes of emo and post-hardcore into its signature amalgamation of chorus-filled guitars, delicate arpeggios, and walls of distorted guitar sound.”
I love the energy coming from the song and this new direction they are taking. Cannot wait to hear the full album once it is out. The single was released on Bandcamp with another song – a slower ambient version of this single by Contradicta.
I reached out to the band and asked them our 3 questions
What inspired you to start making music and what keeps you making music?
We just wanted to record some music. Our idea was to make a couple of songs, go into a studio, and have something to show our kids in a few years. An excuse to hang out, basically, but then it started growing until we were like “ok, we’re actually a band now”.
What was the most challenging thing in your music (artistic) path?
We started the band just before COVID-19 and wrote and recorded our first stuff during the lockdown. That ironically helped us a lot because we had a lot of free time. The hard part was when everything started becoming normal again, we had to find ways to keep working well.
What would you dream to do if anything was possible?
Start a label with lots of money to release more of all the great music made in Latin America.
