Single: HISTORY OF TIME – 900 DREAMS

HISTORY OF TIME (stylized in all caps) is an alternative rock 3 piece that combines various influences ranging from acoustic rock to punk to hip hop. Their music demonstrates an effective use of catchy hooks and personal, introspective lyrics.

They recently released a skateboarding-inspired song and music video with their track “900 Dreams,” which features an alternative rock sound filled with lyrics of nostalgia. The track opens with an instrumental filled with clean, reverberant guitars and a strong, driving bassline accompanied by a soft drumbeat. The vocals enter with a heavily distorted tone, drenched in deep layers of delay and reverb, as the drums introduce a more conventional alt-rock beat. The track presents a more traditional yet modern alternative rock sound in the vocals, with lyrics that discuss the songwriter’s life as a teenager and topics such as his school crush.

The sound feels like a combination of pop-punk, reminiscent of songs such as Blink-182’s classic “I Miss You” and a more modern tinge that reminds me of the punk-inspired work of emo rappers like Juice WRLD and Lil Peep. The track explores relatable and personal topics, such as skateboarding and the narrator’s dreams of being a carefree teenager with immense hope and ambition. The lyrics “who would have thought going home would be a time machine” convey the familiar feeling of nostalgia that a person experiences when they return to a place they haven’t visited in a while. Returning feels almost like nothing has changed, and you have been in this place the whole time.

The music video features the band performing the song near the mountains and in a skate park and shows establishing-style shots of the world around them. You can find the video on YouTube HERE! You can also see the track available for purchase on Bandcamp HERE!
