Though at times we all may deny our ego in an attempt to seem impressive and Buddhist, all of us must carry our egos with us. But no population carries theirs higher and prouder – certainly for worse – than the male population. (Awaiting the first angry comment in 5… 4… 3…)
But look at the world around us! How much fear has the male ego caused through acts of manipulation and abuse? How many wars began due to toxic masculinity rearing its head on a global scale? How far has male chauvinism led us toward detriment? (Once again, I will take all complaints to PO Box 42069, Keep It To Yourselves, Iowa.)
Anyway, Tomdahomie (a.k.a. Tom Hitchcock of Melbourne, Australia) has a new song out about just this very topic. “Ego” sounds like a delightful indie romp with a poppy tempo, a catchy lead guitar part and a bouncy drum beat with the occasional chipper woodblock. But the lyrics dig into the quiet damage the unchecked male ego causes, or – as the song’s Bandcamp bio says – “how ignorance toward emotional complexity and a lack of empathy can both shape the way people move through the world.”
I felt Hitchcock penned something poignant in this particular lyric: “Narcissistic overtones / How can he not understand what’s going on / When he don’t listen to a goddamn thing / I think he might have an ego thing.” I cannot think of one single person in the wide, wide world of sports who might fit that description. Not one, I tell you! (This is clearly sarcasm and I am sure you and I are thinking of the exact same person.)
In any case, “Ego” pairs fitting lyrics to a catchy beat in order to craft a wonderful new single, the first Tomdahomie release since the 2024 EP Tom. If you can’t help but stay mad at the pig-faced brutes spraying their poison maleness all over the place, but still want to vibe, Tom’s got you covered. He seems like a good egg.
Take a listen to “Ego” below.
