The last time we covered Boston’s Night Moth was when they released their full band demo in February 2020 (you know, the before-times) as part of a “recommendations from Twitter” feature (back when we still used Twitter.) Up until that point, Night Moth had been the solo project of Emery Spooner since 2018. But over the following years, Spooner would reconnect with former bandmates (such as Squitch’s Denzil Leach and Kit Malmberg) as well as other musician friends (Miles Chandler of Clifford) to take Night Moth to the next level.
Now, six years after our first coverage of the band, they return with news of a debut self-titled album. Night Moth, out 1/28/26, contains eleven tracks based on demos and acoustic songs the band has developed since the turn of the decade, marking a milestone in their existence. The first single from the album, “Rumination Song”, shows off the upcoming record’s vibe: Somber but playful, pensive but powerful, political and personal.
While “Rumination Song” has a polished sound with bursts of fuzz, it still has the raw vibe of Night Moth’s demos. All the tracks on the upcoming self-titled album were arranged in apartment bedrooms as voice memos and tracked live in Charlestown lofts and DIY venues. You can hear the musical chemistry and friendship between the band members working to create something bigger than the sum of their parts. “Rumination Song” is a preview of what’s to come, and it sounds like it’ll take Night Moth to new heights in the back half of the 2020s.
Take a listen to “Rumination Song” below.
