Single: Nina Gi – 500 days of summer

Nina Gi’s new single “500 days of summer” is set to be released on August 25th, an indie pop track about looking back on a relationship with acceptance. Mixed and mastered by Lawson Anderson, the song came together in a way that feels almost destined, written in the middle of the night straight out of sleep, and then brought to life with Anderson a couple of weeks later.

Nina Gi has spoken openly about what the song means to her, calling it a reclamation. She described how so many fragments of herself have been lost along the way, pieces taken by others who wanted to explore parts of her without ever seeing her in her entirety, and how the parts of her that stayed were the ones that gathered everything back together. I really connect with the song in the aspect of reclaiming who you are through what someone may have experienced in prior flings, relationships, etc. How you wish to be seen as someone the person could want, could love, could need, yet that’s never reciprocated in the way you may want, and you have to accept, you’ll never get it from that person you want it from so badly. That context for “500 days of summer” gives a depth that you feel before you fully understand it, ultimately that’s how I perceive the song and I think it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Her voice is the centerpiece of everything for me. Distinctive and perfectly suited for indie and alternative pop, there is something so unique to her that is immediately captivating and slightly reminiscent of Liz Phair but entirely her own. The way she enunciates “nobody knows your game” is one of those small vocal moments that sticks immediately, and when she slides into the chorus with “you’re laying me down,” it is effortless and anthemic all at once. The repeated “WAAAAYYY” at the end is genuinely a fun touch and I find it to be playful, this track is truly special.

With three upcoming shows across North Carolina and a voice presence this distinctive, Nina Gi is someone I genuinely see going places. I love her and I love this song, keep your eyes on her!!!!
