Continuing their string of excellent recent singles, North East-England-based indie-rockers Fortitude Valley are back with Oceans Apart – the third track taken from their upcoming album Part Of The Problem, Baby (due out 1st August on Specialist Subject Records).
Australian singer and songwriter Laura Kovic has been cooking with gas on these catchy new tunes, and Oceans Apart continues this trend.
Instrumentally, this one has more than a touch of First Impressions Of Earth-era The Strokes about it as well as the influences we’ve seen on prior tracks – namely The Beths, Surfer Blood, Allo Darlin’ and Weezer.
Vocally, Kovic sounds like a more upbeat version of Isobel Campbell. Lyrically, she touches, with notable nostalgia, on her Australian homeland again (as well as the title of the song being a little nod to the seminal Aussie band The Go-Betweens) as she sings about “crossing my heart, oceans apart / trying to make it on my own”.
The aforementioned album is available to pre-order from their Bandcamp here, and they will be embarking on a short tour of the UK in September to celebrate it – catch them if you can – you can find all the info here.
