Very Many Horses’ new single “Ponderosa Sun Club” confidently treads on the quiet introspection of cancer and the myriad of emotions and intricacies that go along with that. You may not think that at first listen though, as it is broader with the themes it tackles.
It’s perfect for the warm weather, with its sun-drenched production that juxtaposes with the emotional lyrical delivery that sings about letting it all hang out and feeling pangs of freedom. This is what comes when learning not to care what others think about you when you seem less recognisable to some, but much more familiar with yourself.
The identity politics explored in this number are very relatable, and I look forward to their debut album which is on the way very soon, which will deal with more complex themes veiled beneath an indie-folk/alt-rock wrapping.
At the same time though, I wouldn’t want to categorise Very Many Horses into anything rigid genre-wise, as we are expected to hear a varied fusion of different sounds in the different tracks that have been created, not just one style for everything, which is very admirable and impressive.
An artist who the band’s Greg Hancock admires is Tracey Emin, whose spirit he found inspiration in through her own cancer diagnosis and unfiltered truth, which in turn gave way to the lines “The most aggressive type of cancer, it works faster than the chemo.”
Uncompromising art like this speaks for itself with its honesty, beauty, and genuine delivery layered with an impressive musical production and structure.
