Satellite is the new single from Nashville power trio Cold Equations, their first release since their self-titled album in 2023. Satellite presents an interesting blend of guitars that sound equal parts shoegaze and powerpop. They trade off between distorted and reverbed in the chorus, to palm-muted and punchy during the verses. The rhythm section of Ryan Dishen on drums with John O’Brien on bass keeps everything tight and compact. From frontman Drew Kohl, the vocals are crispier than what is found in typical shoegaze songs, and it is difficult not to hear the J Mascis influence in the distorted, whooshing guitar solo.
For those of you familiar, instrumentally, the song reminded me of the 2010s British shoegaze group Cheetahs. But perhaps a better comparison is to the famed indie rockers Yuck. Overall, Satellite is a promising release that reminds me of the passionate guitar-fueled indie rock of the 2010s.
