The Dutch musician Rupit’s mysterious new single “Omen” seamlessly blends pop and experimental impulses. To quote the artist, they use “experimental storytelling devices” to create “a world full of mysteries and raw emotion.” The sonic layers do ultimately create a world of their own, drawing effectively on harmonics, ambient noise, a boatload of reverb, and occasional signal interference.

The musician comes closest to certain versions of Bon Iver. The soulful voice brings plenty of melancholy to each vocal line, and the music delivers a range of subtle surprises without ever getting too far beyond the minimalist aesthetic that defines the tune. There is a touch of Hovvdy in the production, too, one that brings together organic and electronic elements that culminate in a unique pop sensibility.

The lyrics appear to describe a relationship, one in which the narrator encounters natural disasters –or, at the very least, startling fires — before asking “what’s that supposed to mean?” Perhaps the song title, “Omen,” offers a tentative answer to this question, but the lyrics remain enigmatic and existential, a mixture of landscape and destruction. An omen of what it is difficult to say, but the song certainly seems to portend only good things for the audience, who will find that this is a track that rewards repetition and attentive listening.
