Single: Whiskey Brisket – Pilot

It’s not often I get to write about a band from my own hometown. OK, it’s not just not often, it’s never happened before. I’m not exactly from a big town (although you may have heard about it recently, Fuck you very much for your hate, bigotry and lies Donald Trump and JD Vance). Whiskey Brisket is the first ska band I’ve ever heard come out of Springfield, Ohio.  They debuted their first single last year with “Dead Man”, and on October 10th they dropped “Pilot”.

On a first listen I think the horns are probably the most impressive part of the track, and the horns are constantly setting a rhythm for almost the entire track. The vocals are solid, with a good mix allowing them to be clear throughout the track regardless of how much is going on. The upstrokes on the guitar are great for creating nice danceable rhythms and add plenty of texture at times. Everything is working in this single, especially the trumpet solo, which perfectly plays into a stripped down verse that follows. I love it.

If I had a complaint about this album it’s that I want more of everything. I want more songs. I want to find out what’s next- and since I am no longer local to the area, I can’t just catch them at a show to find out what else they are doing, but I can guarantee you I’ll be trying to look them up if I’m ever in that area again, and I’ll be following them to hear their next song whenever it comes out, and you should too!
