Once more, you get me writing about a band from Boston. And as the sun rises over the Charles and kisses the previously icy pavement of the Zakim Bridge as cars plunge into the Big Dig, the music I share starts sounding a little sunnier as well (at least in terms of the music. The lyrics, of course, remain quite rainy.)
This is the new single from The Horses, “Maybe If I Tried”. We shared their previous single “Little Epiphany” a couple of months ago, with Andy saying it “sounds like a group of friends drunkenly hopping on stage to jam out a hit”. “Maybe If I Tried” has a touch more polish to it, sounding more like Tyler and Johnny slept off the bender and hit the studio to record the track. It’s the indie pop work of a band with more confidence in their sound.
They have every right to feel confident. After all, The Horses sold out the legendary Cantab Underground for the first (and so far only) live performance last September, and their singles have all received recognition from the blogosphere and massive play on streaming services. Not bad for a couple of guys who dreamed up the band four pints deep before an Oasis show.
The Horses are a band driven to make great music, and “Maybe If I Tried” is no exception: It’s a lovely indie pop romp with some lyrics about being quite sad and therefore losing a chance at romance. It’ll fit right in on a playlist blasted through a speaker at Revere Beach this summer, unless they close the beach again due to “high bacteria levels”.
Take a listen to “Maybe If I Tried” below.
