Single: nazire – leech

BEWARE – it may just latch onto you and refuse to let go!

nazire is an experimental artist from Istanbul known for her genre-blending style. In 2020, she had the dream start to her music career – aged just 18, her debut single landed on multiple Spotify editorial playlists, and the song accumulated over 300k Spotify streams.

Her latest single ‘leech’ is another excellent example of her unpredictable approach to music. The song tells a dark tale about having the gradual realisation that someone – a close friend – has actually been draining and mistreating you for years.

The track spins itself awake – we can hear the record winding up to speed – and straight away it’s full of left-field ideas and unique sounds.

Guitar’s straight out of the 80’s (which I loved, by the way!), display a crazily chopped, staccato, rat-a-tat sound. They add an amazingly twitchy kind of energy.

nazire’s vocal floats along with a contrasting tone – lyrics enigmatically blurred – as the song manages to combine a modern – almost industrial – shoegaze sound with that 80’s sensibility. It’s glitchy and lo-fi, but the combination of electronic and acoustic means there is plenty of warmth here too.

The drum machine grooves away, driving the track forward with a pulsating bassline – it feels wonderfully gritty and raw, but always with a velvety gloss.

“like a leech, my leech
I kept you close yeah, I let you grow
like a leech, my leech
I let you feed, you didn’t let me breathe”

‘leech’ is the final single from nazire’s upcoming debut album ‘glitchfork’, but beware – it may just latch onto you and refuse to let go!
