I believe I’ve exulted about the Swedish group The Essence of the Universe once before on this blog, having written about “Ave Maria” and its hypnotic catchiness. Now the group return with their new single “Bring All Your Lovers”, a song that increases the volume even if it sheds no further light on who these rockers are. (Are they real? Are they a government psyop formed in labs beneath the forests of Sweden? Does it matter?)
“Bring All Your Lovers” takes a turn from the joyful psych-pop of “Ave Maria”, instead choosing a more rock pump-up rock sound with a four-on-the-floor drum beat that echo as they might off the walls of a stadium, glistening guitars lush with reverb and flange, and a driving rhythm that would get even the most stoic audience stomping and clapping. At the chorus, everything explodes into a wall of sound: Guitars take on layers of distortion as the voices of Daniel di Porto Rosa and Nic Nikita multiply.
It gives the effect of thousands — perhaps tens of thousands — of fans screaming this chorus en masse, which has been a theme of the music of The Essence of the Universe thus far. The wordless yodeling in the background of the chorus of “Ave Maria” and the titular chorus chant of “Bring All Your Lovers” suggest that this group knows how to put together a tune to drive the people wild. Of course, di Porto Rosa and Nikita have never performed their act live, but if they did, “Bring All Your Lovers” would certainly rouse the crowd to their feet.
As the band says throughout all of their materials: Come curious. Stay unsure. Leave a little changed. Take a listen to “Bring All Your Lovers” below.
