Single: loserbirds – Too Bad

Vancouver indie quarter says goodbye to the scene with a final single full of fuzz and feelings.

What do you make of an underground band which hasn’t released anything for three years, with only a few singles and an EP to their name? You figure they’re done, washed, and faded into the slightly stinky tapestry of indie lore. But some bands choose to go out with a bang, as is the case with Vancouver’s loserbirds. They dropped their new — and for now, final — single “Too Bad” today, marking the end of an era in a blaze of guitars.

The band released their Lone Palm EP in 2019, about a year after forming, and continued to perform and make music in bursts since then. But according to their Instagram, they’ve let the project lapse over the past year, saying they were “never really that thrilled with the constant online existence that was having a band”. It is a fact that these days keeping an indie music project alive means having to do all the non-music business without much support, if any. And if that takes away joy from the music side of things, it makes sense to move on to other matters in order to seek joy, or perhaps just something different in life.

So it was for loserbirds, who over the past year have focused on other efforts, forgetting they had “Too Bad” in the can waiting for release. As a final goodbye to the Vancouver and greater indie scene, they’ve put the track out on all platforms. They say, “It’s an alternative rock song. We did our best… It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s ours and we cared for it.” It’s not just the song they’re talking about: They mean that loserbirds as a project was something they cared for and found joy in sharing with the world. And while this era of the band may be over, “Too Bad” and all of their music will live on in perpetuity.
