What a magical week! For weeks I’ve had tickets to see Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based band Something To Do play live in my hometown of Indianapolis on Saturday, August 29th. Then, on the 26th, the band surprised me by releasing a new single, “Hocus Pocus Brain”. Even more, they announced that was the first single off of an upcoming album, to be titled A Little Misdirection.
The intro for “Hocus Pocus Brain” drops you off right in the middle of a cacophony of horns and a skankin’ guitar rhythm. The horns have a somewhat circular component that has a mild circus-like vibe. Given the magical theme of the song title, it feels like it is drawing comparisons to a showman’s performance.
While the song title and music definitely feel magical, the lyrics are much more about seeing through someone’s magic and not becoming disillusioned and disenchanted. Whatever love was once felt could only be resurrected via necromancy. The sleight of hand and misdirection are seen for what they are, and the things that once brought joy have become irritations and annoyances.
That doesn’t mean magic isn’t real. Sure, it will never exist between the protagonist and the former object of their desire, but the music in the song is still performed by some of the greatest bardic musicians in the nine realms. They cast Otto’s Irresistible Dance and I failed my will save. Go give the song a listen and you’ll definitely understand what I mean.
