Single: Secret Choir – better man

“Better man” hits gritty and direct from the first second, then opens into a hazy, slowed-down middle before snapping back, a song built for self-reflection on a long, lonely drive.

Secret Choir is the solo project of Luca Della Foglia, formerly of sittingthesummerout and I Like Allie, now writing raw, emotionally direct songs rooted in DIY spirit. “better man” was born from a feeling of gradual disconnection, drifting from who you meant to become without noticing exactly when it happened.

The song opens with gritty rock guitars, energetic and direct from the first second. Then  Della Foglia’s vocals join in, sounding raw and live with background vocals blending in seamlessly behind him, while Thomas Poletti keeps things tight on the drums underneath.

About halfway through, everything slows down suddenly. The energy drops with a smooth transition as the guitars switch to gentler, less gritty chords, and Poletti’s drums slow down, leaving the song feeling hazy and suspended for a moment before building back up to full energy again.

“We gave our souls to the devil just for the sake of it, we didn’t want anything in return” lands with a kind of exhausted honesty, giving things up not for gain but just because that’s what you did.

Yuri Mapelli, who recorded, mixed, and mastered the track, deserves credit for how clean it sounds. The vocals, guitars, and drums are well mixed, sitting exactly where they should.“Better man” is a well-built, reflective song, one that mirrors its own theme of searching without ever fully arriving, the kind of song that doesn’t pretend to offer redemption. It sits between clarity and disillusionment, where becoming a better man feels out of reach.
