Single: raine – girls who don’t like girls

London-based artist Raine has recently dropped her newest single ‘girls who don’t like girls’ and it’s a sad, sapphic singalong that is sure to enthral crowds for years to come.

With heartbreaking lyrics including the title line “I like girls who don’t like girls”, it’s a tender exploration of falling for those who can’t love you back, which is something that I’m sure many LGBTQ+ people will be able to relate to at some point in their lives.

The melancholic strumming of acoustic guitars gently opens up the song, and with Raine’s incredible vocals, which are reminiscent of acts like Scottish icon Lizzie Reid and Julie Dawson of NewDad, make for an incredibly poignant listen that you just can’t help but revisit.

Love is a brutal, messy thing, which this song perfectly captures. “Kiss me just for fun and go back to him when you’re done / I’ll be your drug if you’ll be my love” paints a clear picture of desperation, the act of letting yourself be almost used in order to feel the cruel yet irresistible hands of the thing that’s called love, even if that means being someone’s secret. The layered vocals on the latter lyric simply add to this already beautiful explanation, a charming and delicate symphony of sound.

Raine’s ‘girls who don’t like girls’ is a stunning debut and leaves me hopeful that the London singer is going to go far.
