We like The First Eloi quite a bit here on Start-Track, having featured them several times over the years. They’ve returned with a new single, “Drawn Into These Headlights”, which once again delivers their haunting shoegaze sound. Simon’s low-tempo krautrock beat on the drums sounds like the slow-motion heartbeat of something – or someone – stunned on the road. Enid’s voice, Rene’s bass, and Rolf’s and Kat’s guitars create the roar of a speeding car. When they collide at the beat drop, you can feel the blow.
The band explains that the song is about a generation frozen in the face of oncoming doom. But that statement could relate to any generation! Gen Alpha (and Beta) are being born and have to grow up in a world where artificial intelligence and extremist politicians warp the truth and dictate what they learn. Zoomers are entering high school, college, and the workforce at a time when prospects for a good future seem bleak. Millennials are starting to burn out, having spent their lives trying to get ahead in a soul-crushing society. And Gen X and Baby Boomers are starting to see their time run out, hoping for easy retirements, but not likely to get them.
None of us – except for the lucky, uber-wealthy few – are prepared for what the future holds, and current signs point to something that overall looks bleak as Hell. The headlights are a lot closer than we think most of the time. Are you 35 and have a job? Bang! Layoffs. Are you in school and have good grades? Bang! The government’s decided what you want to study isn’t worth a scholarship. Are you a young person struggling with your identity? Bang! Some jackass on the Internet has convinced politicians to tell you to shove it.
It doesn’t feel great to be stuck in such a situation. “Drawn Into These Headlights” captures that desperation and fear, with the band channeling the sickening roar in the head of someone watching the bright lights of a Mack truck getting closer. It’s easy to think that we can just jump out of the way and save ourselves from mutilation. But more often than not, we’re all just deer in the headlights, not knowing how much the impact’s going to hurt.
But at least before we get smashed into pancakes, The First Eloi have given us a new fantastic shoegaze track through which we can all share in some darkness. The legendary James Aparicio mixed and mastered the track, and the band recorded and produced it right in their home turf of Hamburg.
