Matthew Peach is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer based in Portland, Oregon. Being the renaissance man and artistic polymath that he evidently is, Matthew plays all instruments on this track (and indeed the entirety of his forthcoming album), recording everything himself at home.
His new tune – entitled “Suki (Sunshine)” – blends angular indie rock with post-rock growth and slightly psychedelic soundscapes. It begins minimally, with wiry guitars, throbbing bass, and a steady beat, developing keenly and organically over time. When the vocal comes in, it feels like it’s got a distinctly 90s energy, but there are also glimmers of other eras present too.
Later in the song, we’re reminded of the sprawling, spectacular 1970s post-punk sound of New York anti-heroes Television, or even the grandiosity and scope of classic rock legends Thin Lizzy (at certain points). There are also touches of the wonky artiness of Pavement and the energy of more modern acts like Tokyo Police Club, Geese, and The Oh Sees.
“Suki (Sunshine)” seems to live and breathe, pulsating and evolving over the course of its more than five minutes. Pair this musical ambition with the achievement of his prior single – last month’s “Long Gone” – and it certainly bodes well for his forthcoming sophomore full-length.
Take a listen to “Suki (Sunshine)” below.
