Taken from their upcoming album ‘So What’, Central Connecticut band Dagwood has finally released their much-anticipated ‘Time Goes By’. Self-described by the quartet as “bemoaning single life in the modern city” and featuring lyrics including “witnessing my fate as time goes by / Baby are you feeling lonely? Do you want to die? / Callous is my heart as time goes by”, they seemed to have created something far larger than life than what would typically be expected from a band of their size. I suppose the writing process contributed massively to creating such a stellar single. For the past two years, over 70 full-lengths have been written, thanks to them creating a full-length for each lunar cycle. A mental thing to do, but it’s clearly paid off for them if ‘Time Goes By’ is anything to go off of.
There’s an air of the early 2000s infused in this song, from the bubbly guitars to the power-pop ethos that Dagwood takes into all their songs; it makes for a listen that I found myself coming back to even when I wasn’t at my laptop reviewing the song.
They dive straight into the song with no time to waste (if you’ll pardon the pun), the drums are like a slap in the face (in a good way, with how punchy they are). For what is just over two minutes in length, it’s a complex track. A testament to their songwriting skills and musicianship. The ending goes on a different path than what’s come before it, which can sometimes make a song fall flat, but this isn’t the case here.
Working alongside producer Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Pixies…), it’s no surprise that ‘Time Goes By’ has cemented itself in Dagwood’s discography as something brilliant.
With hopefully a lot more to come in the future, their latest track leaves me very excited to see which direction Dagwood will go next.
