I owe everyone an apology. I’m sorry. I was wrong. I never really gave The Skints a chance, and that was my mistake. I missed their huge rise to fame- their 2019 album debuted at number 1 on the reggae charts. They’ve toured with incredible ska acts. They’ve featured on songs with incredible ska bands. At one point, I decided to check them out, listened to a couple of songs, and never went back. The songs didn’t do enough for me to leave an impression other than the fact that they didn’t wow me, so I moved on.
I saw they released a new song last week, and some of my favorite bands shared the clips on their social media, and it sounded good. It sounded real good. It only took a few seconds to pull it up on streaming and listen to the whole thing. And then put it on repeat, and listen again. And then, during the next stream, I decided I needed to write about it. I might have made a huge mistake by dismissing the band a few years ago without adequate opportunity, but that doesn’t mean you should repeat my mistake, and in the off chance you’ve never heard of them, well, let me remedy that for you as well.
The Skints are a London-based reggae, dub, dance hall, ska, and punk band, with some rap influences as well. If they are light in any of these categories, it might be ska, which would explain my lack of interest when I previously heard them. But their latest track, “Home,” is so incredibly good. The vocal melody sinks its hooks into you and pulls you in. The vocals are excellent, the rhythm is phenomenal. There are absolutely no complaints with this song.
Normally, I’d spend more time describing a song, but really, you just need to go listen for yourself. Don’t repeat my mistakes.
