Take two parts Grandaddy, blend with equal parts Wilco, add a dash of early Adam Green and a sprinkle of Iron & Wine, and you’re close to the recipe for Wait A Lifetime, the new track from Manchester DIY musician Lester O’Shea.
It’s a charmingly warm slice of lo-fi bedroom folk that’s full of wonderful personality. It is, however, somewhat of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The song starts, and it initially succeeds in convincing you that it’s a straight-up anti-folk tune (albeit one with electronically programmed percussion). There are tender guitars here and vocals to match, but in time, we’re met with additional, less expected components.
What sounds like an organ is introduced and is later combined with some squelchy spacey synths that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Flaming Lips record – the whole track is a glorious mixture of equally beautiful individual elements
Wait A Lifetime is extremely pretty but also brave and ambitious, and is an excellently realised work of art.
Keep your eyes peeled for a new album from Lester in the not-too-distant future.
