Aphantasia has arrived with their debut single, Fix, released just a few short days ago. Hailing from Atlanta, GA, this shoegaze group has hit the nail on the head for me right out the gate. I’m a sucker for this type of shoegaze, and the fact that it’s about being trapped in your own skin? Count me in a million times over.
The atmosphere they create with their reverb-heavy guitars and immaculate vocals is something that drew me in like I was a helpless fish on a line. The instrumentation is like you’re floating in a hopeful and shiny liminal space, with no regard for returning to what you once called ‘home’.
Fix portrays someone who regularly suffers from severe self-loathing, and is endlessly waiting on another person to come and move the clouds from above their head, unveiling the sun and letting it shine through. The emphasis on relying on someone else to make you feel worthy and more “yourself” is apparent, like shedding your skin and becoming someone new will fix all of your problems once and for all.
This song puts Aphantasia on the map for me and I eagerly await their next drop. I’m always excited to add another shoegaze artist to my listening cauldron.
