Single: Heimat – Don’t You Tell Me

Split between Venice and Seattle, this Italian-American dreampop combination are swinging for the fences – but also delightfully subtle – on their shoegazey new single.

Dreamy, gazey, heartfelt and noisy, the new single from Italian-American collaborators Gianluca Favero and Morgan Pettersson Feret – collectively known as Heimat – is the result of a transatlantic partnership that blends dream pop, shoegaze and grunge.

“Don’t You Tell Me” is a wonderfully measured, perfectly poised piece of work, reminiscent of artists as varied as the legendary Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, as well as recent favourites Mannequin Flowers.

This song in particular has a distinct emphasis on subtlety. Not so much musically (they are swinging for the trees here, instrumentally, and they do not disappoint), but more so lyrically. They explain: “The lyrics are a play on words. Almost the same phrase, but when punctuated differently and spoken with different tones, can come across as two completely different standpoints and feelings.” This reminds us of Smells Like Teen Spirit’s classic “Hello, hello, hello, how low?” lyric, something that — whilst seemingly quite minute — is actually pretty significant.

After years of performing across Europe with Painted Vein and MØAA, Gianluca set out to pursue another avenue for his songs. She partnered with Morgan, blending different musical history and frames of reference into one shared vision. The duo work together between the watery web of Venice and the grey skies of Seattle, and the resulting music is deeply affecting. We feel they fit together perfectly and will very much look forward to hearing more from them.

All the instruments were composed and performed by the duo, and recorded, mixed, and mastered at Fox Studio in Seattle and Venice.

A full length album is due later this year. Take a look at the music video for “Don’t You Tell Me” below.
