Following along from their widely acclaimed debut EP Gringo Love, Indianapolis-based trio Fern Murphy has finally dropped their highly anticipated single “Latchkey”.
Released ahead of their upcoming album “Violet Hours” (set for release on the 31st of July), the song can simply be expressed as a melancholic delight. Self-described by the group as “sad but energetic,” it’s clear to see what they mean. From those classical shoegazy guitars to the tantalising drums which help to cut through the haziness of it all, the instruments swirl around you, pulling you further into the deep unknown with every listen.
An ethereally beautiful track about trying to salvage a relationship even though you know that it’s a futile task, I found myself returning to it again and again. “Latchkey” is comforting in a way, with the glimmering guitar lines that build the tune from the ground up into something which people can seek refuge from this cruel world within.
Despite all that I adore about this track, it would be remiss of me not to mention my only gripe: the difficulty in sometimes making out exactly what’s being said. Extremely soft-spoken (although it does flourish at the end into something far bigger than itself), the track does sometimes lose that emotional weight which the Americans are famed for. However, it’s only a minor issue, and I’m certain that others will find that what I’ve stated is exactly what they’re looking for.
If “Latchkey” is anything to base my judgments on, then I’m certain that “Violet Hours” will far surpass any previous expectations that others have of the trio. Calming and shoegaze at its finest, I’m excited to see what Fern Murphy has up their sleeves in the near future.
