Single: Bayonne – Oxygen

A flamboyant, fabulous affair, the new single from the Austin-based multi-instrumentalist is accessible enough for the popsters but cool enough for the indie kids.

With a delightful pop sheen, the new single from the Austin-based Bayonne (aka artist/producer/multi-instrumentalist Roger Sellers) is a flamboyant, fabulous affair. The pop sensibilities cut deftly through the dreamy haze and the wash of sound, resulting in one of the catchiest things we’ve heard in ages.

The basis of the song appears to come from introspection and anxiety. Seemingly written at a time when the artist was feeling unsure of himself and lacking in confidence and/or conviction, Sellars asks himself, “What am I waiting for?” – and we’re glad that he did. It seems to us that once he got over that initial doubt and found a groove, he grabbed the bull by the horns and harnessed the melodies in his head and turned them into a fully fledged dreamy pop banger – and with more than 800,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, it seems many will agree.

Reminiscent stylistically of pop culture household names like Kylie Minogue and early Charli XCX, as well as more indie-leaning acts like Metronomy, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Washed Out, Oxygen strikes a delicate blend. Accessible enough for the popsters but cool enough for the indie kids, its thumping indie pop vibes will surely find a home on dancefloors across the land.

Also acting as producer, engineer and mixer on this track, it seems that Roger Sellers never had anything to worry about.
