Single: Avery Friedman – Photo Booth

The second single from Avery Friedman’s upcoming album, “New Thing”, has officially dropped and I was more than eager to cover it here. Photo Booth started out as a guitar piece, but slowly, she moved away from her guitar and started leaning more into the version we have today, a true pop hit with a hint of chaos.

Avery Friedman recounts the inspiration for this song being an almost dream-like night out with friends, where many trips to the photo booth took place. She brings up a great point that I’ve never thought about when she says, “Something about the novelty, containment, and ephemerality of a photo booth just invites a sort of flirtatious mischief.”

As someone who has never been in or used a photo booth, I never looked at it through that lens before now. A photo booth is a PERFECT excuse to push the boundaries and have a special moment cemented in time, printed out on a slip of glossy paper just for you.

Avery’s vocals took me off guard in the best way, the almost-haunting sounds piquing my interest specifically. Her vocals on top of this sparkly, electro-pop production make you feel like you’ve fallen through a portal into a new world, with no urge to leave.

Her album “New Thing” drops on April 18th of this year, so check out the 2 singles that are available for you to enjoy now and step into this new world!
