Spring in Revers is the light-hearted and carefree single from Sydney duo MOMI’s album MOMI001. The track, and the album as a whole, is a joyous flourish of indie, pop, and shoegaze, oozing the nostalgic vibes from bands like Slowdive, Lush and other similar artists that dominated this scene in the eighties and nineties.
This album has a pretty “odd” story behind it; the two ex-housemates that make up MOMI had a falling out while writing the album and it was unfortunately shelved, much like Brit-pop band Oasis, the two recently patched things up and decided to get the album out before they have another fight. Though I am hoping they can keep the air clear long enough to work on MOMI002?
Spring in Reverse is a fantastic lead single for this release and a great opener for the record as a whole as it immediately demonstrates what the listener is in store for for the next 35 minutes. It manages to bring in more modern sensibilities of indie and bedroom pop with a heavy dose of shoegaze on the side. The track features lush jangly guitars, dead but thumpy drums, and vocals that had me second-guessing whether this was Damon Albarn (I can confirm it’s not, but for a second there…). Later in the album, there’s also a double dip feature from their friend Hatchie on the tracks ‘My Name is Nobody’ and ‘Cellophane’.
Overall, Spring in Reverse and the album MOMI001 is a great addition to this new era of shoegaze and indie pop we’re seeing at the moment and one we’ll find ourselves no doubt revisiting.
