Single: Swiss Portrait – Connection Issues

Praise the Lord; he has returned. The Swiss Man cometh (he’s not Swiss at all). Less than a year after his genre-defining third album – the almighty Someday – Swiss Portrait blesses us with a new single.

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly Oasis-inspired logo in the (rather exceptional) Spotify canvas; this is no experimentation into Britpop territory. It’s Swiss Portrait at his trademark best. Far away, ethereal reverb vocals, pounding persistent percussion and layers of captivating guitar work. There’s also an occasional chirpy sound that feels almost like the world’s tiniest siren being flipped on for just a split second and then off again, repeatedly. It’s playful, pioneering and perfect.

It’s not reinventing the wheel, and “it’s not Space Jazz”, as Noel Gallagher once said whilst rejecting questions about the direction the seminal (if somewhat divisive) Mancunian indie legends were heading in – but we don’t need that, especially not from Swiss Portrait. To know him is to love him, and that indeed we do, and what he does is more than enough. More of the same, please, Michael.
