Singles: Former Jock – Bad Movies & Olympia

If you enjoy listening to coming-of-age indie movie soundtracks, Former Jock might have the sound you’re looking for. Based in Seattle, the project is singer-songwriter Spencer J. Bennett’s creation, drawing influence from bands such as Counting Crows, R.E.M., Alvvays, Sam Fender, and Car Seat Headrest. I would also add that I got a Wallows vibe from their sound, despite that being perhaps unintentional. So far, they’ve released 2 tracks: “Bad Movies” and “Olympia”, which I had the pleasure of listening to and writing a review about.

“Bad Movies”, released on August 29th, exudes the innocent and youthful energy of a first love. The guitar introduction is sweet and almost nostalgic, reminiscent of a teen romance movie. Every element of the song fits well together, from the harmonies in the chorus, the guitar solo, the infectious melody, and the adlibs, which combine to form an incredibly sweet track. The song was based on the artist’s personal experience with a second date, reflecting the bravery being in love in your youth gives you to do reckless things only to impress your date. The lyrics show the insecurities and doubts of a young person navigating a crush and their first experiences with relationships, and that energy is matched by the sound of the track: bright, exciting, yet calm and romantic.

“Olympia”, released on July 18th, carries on with the indie movie energy, but takes a more energetic route and lyrics rooted in self-reflection. Former Jock really has a gift for creating catchy choruses and incredible guitar solos, as reflected in this song and “Bad Movies”. The slight drop in power during the bridge, taking an acoustic turn, only for it to build up to a fuller chorus, really brings out the infectious energy of the song and adds to a bigger impact when the last chorus hits. The track’s lyrics start off more melancholic than the ones in “Bad Movies”, but ultimately stop at a conclusion: giving yourself into the present and accepting wherever life will take you next.

Generally, Former Jock has a distinct sound that is perfect for alternative indie fans and is both nostalgic and refreshing. Their strengths lie in their introspective lyrics, catchy melodies, and delightful guitar solos, as well as their ability to get their message across with their sound. It has been a pleasure to review and talk about their music, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else they have in store next.
