Indonesian-born Wandour describes his sound as “an ethereal and experimental sonic concoction with a touch of mainstream appeal”. Blending elements of pop, synth-wave, electro, house, and techno, he layers field recordings with obscure cassette loops – all sourced, processed, and warmed through vintage cassette decks and analog gear.
In fact, you can hear the breeze as his new single ‘Seaside Moments’ starts, and there’s a slightly disconcerting feeling that time might be running in reverse.
A shuffling break with its crisp ride ushers everything along nicely, though, as a bubbly bass throbs and a spoken vocal utters familiar maxims about life.
The collage of sounds drifts and wanders, occasionally coalescing to form a vivid picture – it’s like being gently tumbled by the sun-warmed waves as fragments of sound flash past with a stuttering, jittery urgency.
There is plenty of melody too – a beautifully processed piano loop gives the track a nice jazzy edge, and rounded pads melt into orchestral strings, adding a marshmallow softness and a sweeping elegance.
It’s a heady, hypnotic kaleidoscope of electronica that, when it finally fades, leaves a nostalgic tear in your eye.
Look out for Wandour’s upcoming album ‘Echoterrium’, to be released on April 7th.
