atmos bloom, the London-based duo of Tilda Gratton and Curtis Paterson, release “It’s Enough” on July 8th, the latest single ahead of their upcoming album Everythingness, out July 24th. The two first met at a university in Manchester when Tilda auditioned to play bass in Curtis’ band, and seven years later, now partners and collaborators, it’s bittersweet, and I admire that, as an artist, I can see their connection in this song and in their previous art.
“It’s Enough,” in my perspective, is a song about the weight of other people’s expectations, the feeling of being pulled in too many directions, and never quite measuring up to what each person needs from you. Lyrically, it is dense and layered, moving through fragmented images of doubt. Lines like “you want all of me, and it is driving me mad” and “wake up one day, and it’s all of me, and it’s the end” capture that feeling of being spread so thin and that you start to disappear inside of it. Their lyricism is genuinely creative and can illustrate a story for an audience that is relatable.
Tilda’s vocals carry a softness that is serene and carries the weight of her words; the guitars and drums on this track create an upbeat momentum that sits interestingly with its lyrical weight, not sad exactly, but not entirely at ease. Composed by both Gratton and Paterson, the track reflects the psych-rock and dream pop influences the duo has cited, particularly the hazy atmospheres of bands like DIIV and Deerhunter.
I really enjoyed “It’s Enough”, it’s a grower rather than an immediate grab, but there is something genuinely compelling about what atmos bloom are reaching for here. I’m excited for their album and what it’ll bring for them 🙂
