Marsh Davis turns open wounds into an emotional sonic journey on “She Still Cries For You,” the second single from his upcoming EP. Infusing the breezy intimacy of traditional Americana with elements of contemporary garage and soul, the California native’s summery new track puts the genre’s inherent nostalgia to work in a memory-driven narrative.
A bare guitar opens the track, loaded up with plucky reverb that has a clattering, almost abrasive edge. It’s just enough grit to imbue the restrained intimacy of the first verse with a sense of tension and forward pull. Davis’s vocal range is delightful throughout: soulful and unhurried, dancing elegantly within the accompaniment. The band arrives in the second verse, and the track blooms into a polished neo-Americana groove in the vein of Mt. Joy and The Black Keys.
