Single: Waking Hours – Slow Dancing

Minneapolis has had to weather a lot over the past couple of months, but it has continued to stand strong against federal occupation and violence. Even with the chaos, incredible people and organizations have stepped up to help their neighbors. And of course, nothing can stop folks from creating incredible art in the face of terror.

Last December, Twin Cities-based band Waking Hours released “Slow Dancing”, their latest single. We’ve covered plenty of music from the group before, even including a track on our ninth sampler. “Slow Dancing” serves as another example of the band’s dedication to creating atmosphere. Every sound echoes as Liv Hedley sings of a romantic quandary: “I don’t want to be alone, want to be alone/But I don’t know.”

The song soars toward the end, giving shoegaze lush with emotion as Hayden Tourtelotte and Christer Kheun’s guitars layer over each other, and Conor Jolly’s bass and Henry Lundeen-Detisch’s drums roll like thunder. Even though the lyrics point to Hedley seeking space – “I think it’s in my genes/I’m just saving you from me” – it’s clear from the vocals and the music that no one in the band wants loneliness.

Especially now, as Minneapolis continues to fight against hatred and darkness, having other people close for companionship makes a world of difference. Whether helping each other out in the neighborhood or creating good art, Minneapolis has come through. Waking Hours are part of that story, and “Slow Dancing” is a sign of more to come. Take a listen to the new single, and follow the band on Instagram for updates about future shows and music.
