Glistening like bright summer sunshine on the surface of a gently rippling lake, the new tune from singer/songwriter Lone Aires comes shimmering softly into focus.
With shoegazey textures, post-punk indebted indie disco rhythm section (think Bloc Party at their most measured and considered), and hazy, faraway vocals, Alone has all the makings of an instant nu-gaze classic.
The title track from the upcoming EP, Alone is emblematic of 4 years’ worth of hard work. The German-Portuguese multi-instrumentalist’s project has become more and more honed with time, refining a sonic niche that is all his own. Sure, you could argue there are obvious influences from shoegaze legends like My Bloody Valentine and dream pop archetypes Cocteau Twins, but, really, when is that not the case with such bands?
The weight of the guitars – which seem to submerge and also elevate simultaneously – and the way in which the other instruments work around them is an absolute joy – and something only comes with practice and, we’re sure, an immense amount of passion. With every instrument played by the man himself, this absolutely adds up. A labour of love, if there ever was one.
The artist tells us that the song “thrives on contrast: a driving forward momentum carried by a dense, immersive atmosphere”. It’s this dichotomy that makes the track so compelling. You don’t know whether to smile or cry – but the fact that it generates feeling at all is the trick.
The Alone EP is due to be released on November 13.
