With You is a fantastically energetic and excitingly vibrant pop punk track from Montreal quartet Victories.
Operating very much within the traditional realms of the genre, With You is a bittersweet, heart-on-sleeve, loving lament in the vein of bands like New Found Glory, Sum 41, My Chemical Romance & Fall Out Boy.
It’s high tempo. It’s earnest. It’s spunky. It’s executed perfectly. It’s everything you could ever want from a pop punk song and even more.
Some of the lyrical imagery is absolutely stunning (“scratch our names on frosty windows when we meet” is our personal favourite). They’re all delivered with the sentimentality that you’d expect from a romantic pop punk track. Musically, you would say exactly the same. The persistent pounding drums, the guitar dynamics, and the song-serving bass – it’s all here. In parts, we’re reminded simultaneously of The Offspring as well as Simple Plan – in addition to the aforementioned acts.
Victories have really perfected the pop part of pop punk. With You is insanely catchy. The excellent production, mixing, and engineering also help – special mention should be made to Kyle Marchant for his contribution here.
All in all, this is basically heartfelt pop punk 101, and an exemplary version at that.
