Single: Underneath The Lookout – Daydream

British dub and reggae duo Underneath The Lookout have slowly been rolling out singles, with Daydream being their third song released in the last 18+ months. The songs are mostly dub mixes with catchy rhythms, mixes of rapped and melodically sung vocals, plenty of keys and synth, but also some saxophone and melodica mixed in to give nice reggae rhythms. Both Suzy and Craig sing in the tracks, and both members write the songs.

Our phones have the ability to keep us connected. I discovered this song on my phone. I listened to it on this phone, I wrote my review on the phone, and I shared it with you from my phone. Chances are, you are on your phone reading this right now. Musicians, artists, and other creatives have been forced to use social media for networking, to build audiences, to do everything to sustain their music enough to cut into the overwhelming losses associated with being an artist, and dream to make those losses turn to something remotely feasible to break even. There is no escape from our phones. Daydream is about the nightmarish hellscape that is social media. You open your phone and are bombarded with negative news stories, hate, algorithms designed to make you angry, AI slop, rage bait, negative body images, unrealistic beauty standards, male loneliness epidemic absurdities, self-help that tries to tell you that you are inadequate without whatever they are selling you, and the desire to just get away from it all. The world is bad enough without the internet making it worse- and all you want to do is get away, Daydream of something better.

The song is beautifully written, has a gorgeous melody, smooth horns, and a catchy rhythm. Craig’s verses are laid out nicely to deliver the message, while Suzy’s voice is soothing to perfect the vibe. This song makes me look forward to the day when there is a full EP or LP to play.
