Trust Blinks is an indie rock project based out of the United States that takes influences from many different genres ranging from anti-folk and alt-country styles to a more distorted and heavy noise rock approach. Their song “Dirty Dishes,” off of their 3 way split with Hiding Places and Tombstone Poetry, blends these influences to tell a story about the way life takes the ambition of young people, distracts them from their hopes and dreams and forces them to deal with mundane daily tasks and worries.
Beginning with a softer, clean guitar sound, the song creates a mellow yet calming atmosphere that feels almost dreamlike. The contrast between dreaming big and the mundaneness of life is set up to tell the story through sound before the lyrics even come in. The song is then met with a distorted, noisy rock-style guitar riff that feels like the way those dreams fall down away from you. The lyrics come in with the song once again featuring a clean tone with a soft and somewhat distant vocal describing the ways in which life used to feel like an adventure into unexplored territories, like an astronaut through outer space, but now feels like a chore. The description of watching your roommate’s dirty dishes and having to worry about such a small thing is easy to relate to and gives the song a bit of a slice-of-life feel. The distorted and noisy guitars slowly fade into the track before exploding into a catchy and atmospheric chorus in the song’s second half. The song descends into a clean instrumental outro featuring a quieter and slightly unsettling distorted guitar that adds to the melancholic atmosphere of the song.
You can find the song and the full split (I recommend the full EP if you are a fan of this song) on Spotify. Follow Trust Blinks on social media and Instagram to keep up with their music and learn about their new releases!
